Rumis
In A Nutshell
It's a block placing game like Blokus - but unlike Blokus, you build up the way. The rules are easy to learn and the game play itself is surprisingly soothing. There are four game boards, which determine what you are building, and how high you can go, and each player gets a set of 11 wooden blocks all of the same colour, with all of the 11 pieces being different. It's like 3D Tetris!
The first player places a block on the game board, and then the opposition players place their first blocks. They must touch at least one face of an opponents stone, and the ground, for the first round. After that you take it in turns to place your blocks on the board, making sure that you touch your own colour and that there are no overhanging blocks. When the building is complete, or no one has any blocks left, the winner is the player with the most faces visible from above. Try not to get blocked in, and try to use up all your pieces, as any left at the end count against your score.
The rules are easy to pick up, games don't last very long and the blocks can be used for solitaire puzzles as well, as you can try to make cuboids of various shapes and sizes. Rumis was nominated for 'Game of the Year' in Germany in 2003 and the US Version has won the prestigious Mensa Select award.
They Say
"..inspired by the architecture of the ancient Incans, RUMIS - or “stones” - uses your spatial awareness and critical thinking skills as you try to outwit your opponents while building historical Incan structures, a Pyramid, Tower, Stairs or a Wall."
